Mercury Outboard Motors
Carl Kiekhaefer, the brain behind Mercury Marine, initially had plans to make magnetic separators for the dairy industry. He purchased 300 defective outboard motor boats from a small company in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. With the helping hands of a small staff of people Carl Kiekhaefer re-built the motors and sold them to another company. The buying company was overwhelmed with the quality and went on to place more orders. The motors being designed by Carl Kiekhaefer and his staff were of competitive quality, and thus the client list started to grow. He named the company Mercury after the fleet-footed Roman god and in 1940 New York Boat Show his company bagged the jackpot of 16,000 orders.Carl Kiekhaefer used to design lightweight chainsaw for the American Army during the World War II and today its products are being sold outside the U.S. Mercury outboard motor sizes range between 2.5 to 300 horsepower and sterndrives touch 1,200 horsepower.
